Course Description

VOC and KJ Analysis for Concept Design is a two-day instructor-led course that is part of the New Product Introduction for Software curriculum. The intent of the course is to introduce the VOC (Voice of the Customer) and KJ (Kawakita Jiro) Analysis processes. Participants learn to interview customers and collect their product wants and needs. Once they gather the data, they synthesize and prioritize it using the KJ Analysis tool. This process will enable employees to more effectively gather, prioritize and apply customer requirements in the development of hardware or software at the onset of a project. NUDs (New, Unique or Difficult) and Kano techniques are also introduced for zeroing in on customer requirements. During this highly participatory class, employees work through a case study applying VOC and KJ. They write purpose and objective statements, create interview questions, practice interviewing, document customer needs and images, create affinity diagrams, and prioritize customer needs. These processes enable Motorola to focus efforts on the value differentiating requirements that underwrite and enable the business case.

Course Objectives
Identify the basic elements of concept engineering
Begin to collect customer needs Voice of the Customer (VOC)
Identify tools used to conduct concept engineering and their sequence of use
Begin to organize the data using affinity diagrams into structured set of customer requirements - Kawakita Jiro (KJ Analysis)
Be familiar with Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and Critical Parameter Management (CPM)
By achieving (all of the above), learners should begin translating customer needs into a clear and comprehensible systems requirements document
